To kickstart a fitness journey, the author tested two AI-powered calorie-tracking apps, Bite Pal and Snap Calorie, for three days. Both apps aim to simplify calorie and macro tracking by allowing users to photograph their food.

Bite Pal offers a gamified experience with a virtual pet raccoon that reflects fitness progress. However, its free version has limitations on scans and features. Snap Calorie, while having a more straightforward interface, provides unlimited free access to its core features, including barcode scanning and recipe logging. Its AI food photo capture requires a brief description, leading to more accurate results.

Snap Calorie demonstrated superior food recognition, accurately identifying diverse dishes and drinks, unlike Bite Pal, which often substituted items or failed to recognize specifics like milk content. Snap Calorie also successfully identified a specific iced coffee from a screenshot, a task that stumped Bite Pal. Ultimately, the author chose Snap Calorie for its accuracy, extensive food library, and comprehensive free features, finding it more reliable for achieving fitness goals, including a faster estimated goal weight achievement.
