Google Health App Review: Mixed Results After Six Months of Testing

Google's revamped Health app, formerly known as Fitbit, brings a welcome visual overhaul with colorful animations and clearer navigation across four tabs: Fitness, Sleep, and Health. The redesign makes metrics easier to digest, though long-time Fitbit users may resist the change. After six months with the Health Coach preview, the experience largely impresses despite some rough edges.

The AI-heavy approach delivers encouraging daily insights, adapting workout recommendations based on your goals and recovery needs. Health Coach considers factors like resting heart rate and sleep quality to suggest rest days or prep for gym returns. However, the AI text overload can overwhelm users, with large blocks of information cluttering each section rather than presenting clean, visual data upfront.

Workout flexibility shines through customizable plans targeting specific goals like 5K training, though Pixel Watch integration remains limited. Non-run workouts won't sync to the watch, and rep counting still requires manual input unlike competing platforms. Google acknowledges user demand for structure and promises weekly schedules returning later in 2025.

Food logging disappoints despite decent photo recognition accuracy. The app correctly identifies meals but miscalculates nutritional values, significantly underestimating protein content. While the Health Coach provides personal trainer-like guidance, Google Health falls short of fully replacing dedicated fitness apps and their precise tracking capabilities.
