Kiefer Sherwood Signs $29.5M Sharks Extension

San Jose Sharks forward Kiefer Sherwood has agreed to a five-year contract extension worth $5.75 million annually, according to a league source. The 30-year-old was acquired from the Vancouver Canucks in January for two second-round draft picks and minor league defenseman Cole Clayton. Sherwood has 18 goals this season, one shy of his career best, and 25 points in 49 games.

His season was interrupted by an upper-body injury that delayed his Sharks debut until February 4. The extension comes as a surprise after speculation that San Jose might trade Sherwood before the deadline if they couldn't reach an agreement. Sherwood was in the final year of a two-year deal with Vancouver that carried a $1.5 million cap hit.

The contract represents a remarkable turnaround for Sherwood, who was primarily a minor leaguer in the Nashville Predators organization just four years ago. Now he's secured a $29.5 million deal to help San Jose continue building toward contention in the Western Conference. The Macklin Celebrini-led Sharks currently sit three points out of the final wild-card spot in the West.
