Sharks Lock Up Defenseman Kesselring With $13.5M Contract Extension

The San Jose Sharks secured their newly acquired defenseman Michael Kesselring with a three-year contract worth $13.5 million on Monday. The 26-year-old blueliner became a restricted free agent after completing his fourth NHL season, primarily limited by injuries. This deal locks up a pending RFA before he could test the market, giving San Jose cost certainty on the back end.

Kesselring arrived in San Jose via trade from Buffalo just two weeks ago, with the deal including a first-round draft pick swap that moved the Sabres up seven positions to No. 20 overall. The 6-foot-5 defenseman showed promise earlier in his career, topping 20 points in each of his previous two seasons split between Arizona and Utah. However, last season brought a step backward as a nagging lower body injury hampered his production.

The injury issues limited Kesselring to just two assists across 34 games in his lone season with Buffalo. Despite the statistical regression, San Jose clearly values his size and prior offensive output enough to commit significant term and money. This signing addresses a need on the Sharks' defensive corps while they rebuild through the draft.

The contract represents a calculated gamble that Kesselring can return to his previous form. San Jose gains a young, experienced defenseman who fits their timeline, though his injury history raises questions about whether he can consistently contribute at the level needed for a defensive resurgence.
