Star center Macklin Celebrini has expressed openness to accepting less than market value on a contract extension with the San Jose Sharks, aiming to provide financial flexibility for the team to build a competitive roster. "Yeah, 100%. I mean, that's why all of us play. We want to win," Celebrini stated.

Celebrini, 20, is eligible to sign an extension this offseason, with one year remaining on his entry-level contract. As the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 draft, he set a Sharks franchise record with 115 points last season. He also received accolades such as being a finalist for the Ted Lindsay Award and being named Male Player of the Year by the IIHF.

He cited mentor Sidney Crosby's willingness to take a discount on his second contract as an influence. "Obviously, guys want to get paid -- as they should... but of course you want to put your team in the best spot possible," Celebrini explained. He acknowledged the recent high-value contract signed by Leo Carlsson, noting it could set a new standard for young stars in the league, and indicated he will be patient as he and the Sharks approach extension discussions.
