Tre' Johnson, the former standout Washington Commanders offensive lineman and 1999 Pro Bowl selection, died Sunday at the age of 54. His wife, Irene, announced his sudden and unexpected passing during a brief family trip, leaving his four children and extended family devastated and in shock.

Johnson, a 6-foot-2, 328-pound guard, played for Washington from 1994 through 2000, then had a stint with Cleveland in 2001 before returning to Washington for the 2002 season. His Pro Bowl honors in 1999 stand as a highlight of a nine-year NFL career that began after starring at Temple University and ended with his retirement from football.

After his playing days, Johnson became a history teacher at the Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland. Recent health issues had forced him to take a leave of absence from his teaching position. His death marks the loss of a respected figure both on the field and in the classroom, remembered by the Washington Commanders organization and the Maryland community.
