Kawhi Trade to Raptors Halted by NBA Probe

A proposed trade sending Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors from the LA Clippers is on hold pending an NBA investigation into the Clippers' alleged salary cap circumvention. The deal, agreed upon June 30, would have sent Leonard to Toronto for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2027 pick swap, and two second-rounders.

The NBA is examining whether the Clippers illegally funneled money to Leonard through a $28 million endorsement deal with green banking company Aspiration, which also had a $300 million team endorsement. Clippers owner Steve Ballmer, who invested $60 million in Aspiration, denies knowledge of Leonard's deal, stating the team was a victim of fraud by Joe Sanberg, who has been convicted.

Leonard, 35, averaged 27.9 points for the Clippers last season. The Raptors expressed eagerness to finalize the deal, while the Clippers reiterated their innocence and acknowledged the uncertainty the probe creates for all parties involved. The trade's completion hinges on the NBA's findings regarding the Clippers' financial dealings.
