Clippers Salary Cap Probe: Kawhi Leonard's $28M Deal Under Scrutiny

The NBA's investigation into the LA Clippers centers on allegations that owner Steve Ballmer orchestrated a $28 million endorsement deal between star Kawhi Leonard and Aspiration, a now-bankrupt green banking company. The probe, led by law firm Wachtell Lipton since September 2025, examines whether the arrangement circumvented the league's salary cap rules.

Commissioner Adam Silver called the investigation "enormously complex" at All-Star weekend, citing thousands of documents and multiple witnesses. The inquiry follows reports by Pablo Torre revealing Ballmer's $50 million investment in Aspiration through his personal LLC in September 2021, coinciding with the Clippers' $300 million partnership with the company. Six months later, Aspiration signed Leonard to the sponsorship deal.

While Ballmer denies knowledge of the contract and Clippers leadership welcomes the investigation, the probe's complexity means resolution could take months. The findings will be reviewed by a neutral arbitrator who will determine if penalties are warranted. With a hearing scheduled for April 22 regarding related fraud allegations against Ballmer, the Clippers face mounting scrutiny over their business practices and star player's compensation structure.
