Tre' Johnson, the former Washington Redskins offensive lineman who became a Maryland high school history teacher, died suddenly at age 54. His wife Irene announced his death Sunday in a Facebook post, revealing he passed away during a family trip.

Johnson, drafted 31st overall by Washington in 1994 after starring at Temple, played seven seasons with the Redskins through 2000. The 6-foot-2, 328-pound guard earned Pro Bowl honors in 1999 before spending a year with Cleveland in 2001 and returning to Washington for his final NFL season in 2002.

After retiring from football, Johnson became a history teacher at the Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland. His wife noted he had taken a leave of absence due to recent health issues. The former lineman leaves behind four children - Chloe, EJ, EZ and Eden - along with extended family and friends who are described as devastated by his unexpected passing.
