The 40-year-old, known as CJ2K after his 2,006-yard rushing season, now relies on a voice modulator because the disease has stolen his speech. He was diagnosed last year at 39.

Johnson's career spanned ten seasons with the Titans, Jets, and Cardinals, amassing 9,651 rushing yards and 55 touchdowns across 130 games. A three-time Pro Bowler and 2009 Offensive Player of the Year, the 24th overall pick from East Carolina signed a ceremonial one-day contract to retire as a Titan in 2019.

Doctors classify his case as sporadic ALS, which accounts for most diagnoses and strikes without family history. Johnson described the progression as brutal — one year ago he lifted his seven-year-old daughter for a birthday wish; today he cannot. He emphasized the disease changed his body, not his mind or love for family.

By going public, Johnson hopes earlier detection might spare another family the same shock. His willingness to speak through a modulator underscores the cruelty of a condition that traps intact consciousness inside a failing frame.
