Marshawn Kneeland, a 24‑year‑old defensive lineman, died by suicide in November 2025 after a car chase. Post‑mortem analysis by Boston University revealed stage 1 chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), the mildest form that still manifests headaches and concentration loss.

The former Cowboys draftee, selected in the second round of the 2024 draft, appeared in 18 games, starting four. He began playing tackle at seven, played for Western Michigan University, and joined Dallas Cowboys as a defensive end during the modern era of concussion protocols.

The NFL’s $1bn settlement with more than 5,000 ex‑players follows Boston University’s 2023 report that 345 of 376 former NFL athletes studied carried CTE. The study underscores that even with improved helmets, the risk remains high, and more than 21,000 former players could qualify for compensation.

CTE’s link to suicide is not established, yet this case signals that current protective measures may be insufficient. Teams, fans, and league officials face a hard lesson: the sport’s safety agenda must accelerate research and prevention to protect younger players and preserve lasts credibility.
