Imogen Grant targets LA 2028 Olympic gold

British Olympic champion Imogen Grant is pursuing a second gold at the Los Angeles 2028 Games after winning lightweight women's double sculls gold in Paris with Emily Craig. With lightweight rowing removed from the Olympic program, the 30-year-old, 5ft 6in athlete has transitioned to open-weight rowing, targeting a spot in Britain's quadruple sculls. This shift requires Grant to compete against women typically four inches taller and 20kg heavier — a significant power advantage in rowing.

Rather than cutting weight to meet the 57kg lightweight average, she must now gain muscle and mass on a vegan diet, consuming 3,500-4,000 calories daily compared to the average woman's 2,000. Protein sources include tofu, chickpeas, beans, and vegan shakes. Grant emphasizes technique and boat-moving efficiency honed in lightweight rowing as her competitive edge.

Balancing training with NHS doctor duties until recently, she served as a reserve at the 2025 World Rowing Championships in Shanghai and has now returned to full-time rowing, earning a seat in the boat. Her plant-based approach stems from climate activism, though she avoids framing it as performance-driven.
