The Washington Commanders will retire Hall of Fame running back John Riggins' No. 44, honoring his storied career that spanned from 1976 to 1985. Riggins becomes the seventh player in franchise history to receive this distinction, with the ceremony set for the Commanders' game against the Los Angeles Rams on November 8.

Riggins remains the franchise's all-time leading rusher with 7,742 yards and ranks second with 85 touchdowns. He was instrumental in the team's first Super Bowl victory following the 1982 season, earning Super Bowl MVP honors for his 166 rushing yards and a pivotal 43-yard touchdown run in their win over the Miami Dolphins. He also set an NFL postseason record with 610 rushing yards during that playoff run.

The retirement of his number signifies a renewed connection between the current ownership, led by Josh Harris, and the team's alumni, a relationship that had been strained under previous ownership. Riggins, nicknamed "The Diesel," was known for his physicality and connection with fans, embodying a successful era for the franchise.
