Washington Commanders placed cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon on the reserve/retired list. Witherspoon, 31, notified the team of his intentions on Tuesday morning, according to a source. The move clears the roster and acknowledges his decision to step away from the NFL.

Following the retirement announcement, the Commanders signed veteran cornerback Fabian Moreau. Moreau spent his first four seasons with Washington after being drafted in 2017 and brings experience to a defensive backfield in need of depth.

Witherspoon was drafted by San Francisco in the third round of the 2017 draft, played four seasons with the 49ers, two with Pittsburgh, and three with the Rams. He suffered a broken scapula twice in 2025, spending two stints on injured reserve.

John Keim, longtime Washington reporter for ESPN, covered the Commanders since 1994 and has authored four books. His commentary on the team can be heard on The John Keim Report, a radio show airing in Richmond, Virginia.
