Logitech CEO Scouring Globe to Beat Chip Shortage

Logitech Chief Executive Hanneke Faber has zipped around the world for months, visiting suppliers on a quest for a critical component in her company’s keyboards, mice and gaming equipment. “I’ve spent my summer begging, borrowing and stealing chips,” Faber said, then clarified: “I don’t want to say steal. Begging and borrowing!”

The chip shortage persisting across the economy isn’t likely to let up in the near term, she said. Only a handful of companies make memory and storage chips right now, much of which is fueling the artificial-intelligence boom. That is squeezing consumer-tech companies like Logitech.

Faber spoke with The Wall Street Journal about how she is managing the challenge, while also finding some upside in the disruption. “I don’t have a crystal ball, but I don’t see it getting a lot better for another 12 to 18 months,” she said. Faber noted that Logitech launches about 40 new products a year, like the $180 Superstrike gaming mouse, which broke the clicking-speed Guinness World Record.

Faber also discussed supply chain changes, including shifting distribution from Dubai to centers in Holland and China due to Strait of Hormuz issues. She applied lessons from Unilever and Procter & Gamble, emphasizing staying close to consumers.
