Overcast has rolled out transcripts in its latest iPhone app update, version 2026.04. The popular third-party podcast player now allows users to access episode transcripts by swiping left on podcast artwork. For shows with chapters, transcripts appear directly adjacent to chapter screens. Developer Marco Arment confirmed the feature works with "most podcasts" and represents a significant upgrade to the listening experience.

Transcripts live-scroll as episodes play, keeping text synchronized with audio playback. Listeners can tap any transcript section to jump directly to that point in the episode. Devices with iOS 26 compatibility can automatically generate transcripts even for shows that don't natively include them. This functionality mirrors Apple Podcasts' transcript feature while offering additional flexibility.

Arment outlined upcoming enhancements including transcript search capabilities, AI-based analysis for summaries and automatic chapter generation, and clip-sharing with captions. The update strengthens Overcast's position against competitors like Apple's native podcast app. The transcript feature provides accessibility benefits and improves content discoverability for podcast enthusiasts who want to reference specific information.
