Samsung Boosts Exynos Modem Power Efficiency for Galaxy S27

Samsung's Exynos-powered phones have historically struggled with higher standby power consumption compared to their Snapdragon counterparts. However, Samsung LSI appears to have addressed this issue with the new M2700 modem, which will debut alongside the Exynos 2700 chipset in select Galaxy S27 models, according to sources speaking with The Elec. "I understand that the M2700 achieved performance equivalent to or better than competitors' products through voltage adjustment and other measures," said an industry representative. The M2700 is fabricated on the same 4nm Samsung node as the modem in Exynos 2600-powered Galaxy S26 models, now branded Exynos Modem 5410. Despite sharing the same process node, the M2700 delivers improved power efficiency and benefits from an optical die shrink that reduces chip area by 4%. It also upgrades connectivity from 3GPP Release 17 to Release 18 and enhances Non-Terrestrial Network capabilities for satellite communication.

Looking ahead, the M2800 modem, destined for Galaxy S28 models, will transition to a 2nm node. This move aims to further boost power efficiency and free up 4nm capacity, which Samsung plans to allocate toward HBM memory production for AI servers. The company uses the 4nm node to manufacture the base logic die at the bottom of the HBM stack. Samsung LSI continues to refine its designs and is advocating for broader adoption within the flagship Galaxy S series, though internal discussions persist regarding the use of the Exynos 2700 in the Galaxy S27 Ultra.
