Overcast Adds Podcast Transcripts with Key Advantage Over Apple

Overcast is rolling out podcast transcripts that give it a clear edge over Apple's built-in solution. While Apple introduced auto-generated transcripts in iOS 17.4 for podcasts in its app, Overcast is tackling the same feature with some crucial advantages. The third-party iOS app will soon offer transcripts for a wider range of content, including private and members-only episodes that Apple's system can't access.

This matters because many podcasters distribute exclusive content through private feeds that don't appear in Apple's free Podcasts directory. Those episodes miss out on transcriptions in Apple's app, but Overcast will handle them seamlessly. The feature is currently in beta testing, where users can swipe on episode art during playback to view transcripts that scroll live with the audio. You can even tap any line to jump to that moment in the episode.

Overcast's approach also works with dynamic ad insertion and can transcribe episodes on your iPhone in real-time if they aren't already processed. The transcription engine runs on iOS 26+, meaning it processes everything locally without requiring cloud services. This gives Overcast a significant advantage over Apple's solution, which is limited to publicly available content in its directory. The feature is expected to reach the App Store version soon, potentially making Overcast the most capable podcast player for users who value transcript functionality.
