iPhone Digital IDs: States Rolling Out Driver's Licenses

Apple introduced support for adding driver’s licenses and state IDs to Apple Wallet at WWDC 2021. Over a dozen U.S. states have since implemented the feature. Now, seven additional states are officially committed to launching support, with Kentucky planning a summer 2026 rollout. This expansion brings the total number of participating regions closer to a critical mass.

The push for digital IDs reflects a broader shift toward smartphone-based verification, a trend accelerated by the pandemic. While adoption has been slow due to complex government partnerships, this move could eventually replace physical wallets for millions of Americans. It also positions Apple as a key player in the digital identity space, competing with similar efforts from Google and other tech firms.

Beyond the seven committed states, many others are exploring or have enacted legislation for digital driver’s licenses. However, progress varies widely, and delays are common when Apple collaborates with individual governments. A new iOS 26.1 feature also allows passport holders to create digital IDs, independent of state support, offering a universal alternative for travelers.
