Samsung has extended the software support for its latest smartwatches, the Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, to five major Wear OS upgrades. These new models launch with Wear OS 7 and One UI 9, indicating that software support should continue through 2031. This represents an increase from the previous policy of four major Wear OS upgrades and five years of security updates.

This enhanced longevity is likely made possible by the new 3nm Snapdragon Wear Elite chip, which offers improved performance. Samsung announced these upgrades at Galaxy Unpacked in London on July 22. The Galaxy Watch 9 starts at $380, and the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 is priced at $700, with both becoming available on August 7.

This commitment to extended software support places Samsung ahead of competitors, as Google currently offers only three years of software updates for its Pixel Watch lineup. The extended support means the new Galaxy Watches could potentially receive updates up to Wear OS 12.
