Apple Wallet Digital IDs: Setup Guide & State Support List

Apple Wallet now supports digital driver's licenses in 14 states and territories as of April 2026, with several more planning to join the program. Users can add their ID by scanning the physical card and taking verification selfies through the Wallet app. The process is straightforward but requires state-level implementation, creating a patchwork of availability across the country.

The most practical use case remains airport security, where TSA checkpoints accept digital IDs via iPhone tap. Outside airports, adoption remains limited - bars, retail stores, and medical offices typically require physical cards. Some states like Ohio offer free verification apps for businesses, but these tools see minimal real-world usage. The technology promises enhanced privacy by sharing only necessary information during verification.

Digital IDs encrypt and transmit only requested data - whether name, age, or other details - without storing it on the receiving device. While convenience drives adoption, the fragmented state-by-state rollout means most users still need to carry their physical license. As more states implement support and businesses adopt verification tools, digital IDs could eventually replace physical cards, but widespread acceptance remains years away.
