Patreon is laying off 20 percent of its staff, impacting 93 employees, as announced by CEO Jack Conte. Conte stated that changes to the organizational structure, team refocusing, and operational evolution are necessary for faster adaptation.

Laid-off employees will receive 16 weeks of severance plus an additional week per year of service, medical benefits through year-end, and a laptop stipend. The company is also providing make-good payments for some.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is cited as a significant factor in the restructuring. While AI is not seen as a replacement for human creativity, it impacts operations and organization. Conte previously emphasized that embracing AI is crucial for the company's survival, warning of potential extinction within three years if it doesn't adapt.

This internal focus on AI contrasts with Patreon's efforts to protect creators. The platform is implementing Cloudflare's AI Crawl Control to prevent unauthorized scraping of creator content for AI training, especially as more free content becomes available on the platform, increasing vulnerability.
