Peacock Achieves Profitability

Peacock has achieved its first profit, reporting an adjusted EBITDA of $189 million in the second quarter. This turnaround is attributed to the success of major events like the FIFA World Cup, NBA playoffs, and the reality show Love Island USA. The streaming service now boasts 48 million subscribers, an increase of two million in the last quarter.

Executives acknowledged that profitability will fluctuate based on the timing of sports schedules and content releases. While Peacock initially launched in 2020 with a focus on classic NBC sitcoms, it has evolved into a platform heavily reliant on live events and original programming, with sports and reality shows forming its core offering.

This profitability marks a significant milestone, especially after reporting a loss of $432 million in the previous quarter. The impact of the World Cup was partial, as the quarter concluded mid-tournament and Peacock only held Spanish-language rights. This positive financial development is particularly timely with Comcast spinning off NBCUniversal.
