Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is set to return at the US Open after missing four months with a wrist injury. The 23-year-old Spaniard last played competitively on 14 April at the Barcelona Open, where he injured his right wrist. The news was confirmed by football influencer Fabrizio Romano in a joint Instagram post, with Alcaraz writing "here we go!" — Romano's signature catchphrase — on X, accompanied by an American flag and plane emoji.

In addition to singles, Alcaraz may also compete in the mixed doubles event the week before the main draw, with three wildcards still available. He partnered with Emma Raducanu last year but she is out this year due to injury. Alcaraz has slipped to world number three, replaced by Alexander Zverev as number two, while rival Jannik Sinner remains dominant at the top following his Wimbledon victory.

Alcaraz began 2024 strongly, defeating Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open to become the youngest man to complete the career Grand Slam. He won the Qatar Open in February but exited early at Indian Wells and Miami. After losing to Sinner in Monte Carlo, he injured his wrist in Barcelona. He resumed training in July, practicing with Holger Rune in Murcia, though he withdrew from the Cincinnati Open.

The US Open begins Sunday, 30 August in New York.
