Arsenal sign Konsa amid defensive injury crisis

Arsenal have moved to bolster their defence by signing Konsa from Aston Villa, addressing concerns over injuries to key defenders. Last season's title-winning backline, built around William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes, only conceded 27 league goals. However, Saliba is ruled out for an extended period with a long-term back issue, while Jurrien Timber will miss the opening weeks due to a groin problem. This leaves Ben White as the sole fit right-back and 21-year-old Cristhian Mosquera as the only right-sided centre-back option.

The Gunners also made Piero Hincapie's loan permanent and considered Jarell Quansah before turning to Konsa. The 28-year-old brings impressive credentials, including the best ground duel success rate (73.1%) and passing accuracy (95%) among Premier League defenders last season. His performances earned him a spot in England's World Cup squad, where he started seven of eight games.

Manager Mikel Arteta emphasizes squad depth and versatility, stating that understanding injury history and player abilities is crucial. With over £150m spent this summer and a squad valued at £1.19bn, Arsenal aim to maintain their competitive edge across multiple competitions while avoiding last season's injury pitfalls.
