Nearly 70 years after the Soviet Union launched the first satellite, low-Earth orbit (100-1,200 miles up) is increasingly crowded with satellites and debris, raising collision risks. Elon Musk's Space X leads this surge, deploying the largest satellite fleet ever for its Starlink service. Analyst Dallas Kasaboski of Analysys Mason projects at least 41,000 more satellites by 2034, two-thirds from Space X, Amazon.com, and Chinese firms like Land Space Technology, which recently demonstrated reusable rocket boosters. Plans for orbital AI data centers could push totals to 1.5 million.

Jonny Dyer, CEO of Muon Space, argues space has more capacity than terrestrial airspace, but adversarial actions or negligence pose real threats. Collisions remain rare—European Space Agency counts four involving cataloged objects—but the 2009 Iridium Communications satellite crash with a dead Russian satellite created ~1,800 trackable debris pieces. NASA's Mark Matney warns untrackable paint-fleck-sized debris can damage spacecraft at orbital speeds.
