Shuhei Yoshida Slams Sony PC Port Rumors, Defends Multi-Platform Strategy

Recent rumors suggested PlayStation would stop porting major first-party games like the upcoming Marvel's Wolverine to PC, raising concerns about Sony's strategy shift. Former SIE president Shuhei Yoshida addressed these whispers directly at the ALT Games Festival in Australia, pushing back against the speculation. While he hasn't seen evidence of a strategy change this generation, Yoshida acknowledged that if Sony does shift course, maintaining big-budget game investments would prove challenging.

Yoshida strongly advocated for PC ports as a net positive for Sony's business. He argued these releases don't cannibalize console hardware or game sales, instead helping recoup development costs since porting existing games is far cheaper than building new ones. Modern hardware's similar x86 architecture makes this process even more efficient, Yoshida noted, with exceptions like the Nintendo Switch 2 and Valve's upcoming Steam Frame. He also expressed skepticism about the industry's ballooning AAA budgets, calling them unsustainable.

The former exec pointed to Death Stranding 2: On the Beach as evidence of PC ports' value—the title sold over 2 million copies total, with 425,000 units moving shortly after the PC release. Yoshida also discussed how PC's early access model benefits developers by letting them fix bugs before console launches, giving players a more polished experience.
