Kingmax PQ4442 Brings Gen 4 Speeds to Compact M.2-2242 SSD

Kingmax entered the compact SSD market with its PQ4442 series, offering M.2 NVMe Gen 4 performance in the space-saving M.2-2242 form-factor. The drive targets ultrathin notebooks and mini PCs where standard M.2 slots won't fit, delivering high-speed storage in tight spaces.

Available in 500 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB capacities, the PQ4442 pairs 3D QLC NAND with Silicon Motion's SM2268 XT controller. All models achieve up to 5000 MB/s sequential reads, though write speeds vary significantly across the lineup. The 2 TB version hits 4400 MB/s writes while the 500 GB model manages only 2500 MB/s.

Random I/O performance shows the same tiered approach. Larger capacities deliver 400,000 IOPS for 4K reads versus 350,000 IOPS on the 500 GB variant. All versions reach 500,000 IOPS for random writes. Endurance ratings span 280 TBW to 960 TBW, with Kingmax backing the drives through three-year warranties.

The PQ4442 fills a niche for builders needing Gen 4 speeds in constrained chassis, though QLC technology and DRAMless design suggest performance compromises compared to premium alternatives.
