Intel XeSS 3.0 SDK Launches with Multi-Frame Generation

Intel has launched its official XeSS 3.0 software development kit (SDK), marking the latest evolution of its AI upscaling technology. The SDK comes as a pre-compiled binary rather than the open-source release Intel had long promised, continuing a pattern where each XeSS version has been closed-source. This release is available only as a DLL file for Windows, leaving Linux users without native support.

The SDK introduces multi-frame generation (MFG), Intel's answer to NVIDIA's DLSS technology. MFG can generate up to three intermediate frames between rendered frames, potentially quadrupling frame rates in supported games. This positions Intel to compete more directly with rival upscaling solutions as AI-generated frame insertion becomes increasingly common in the gaming industry.

XeSS 3.0 also adds support for external memory heaps, allowing the SDK to use GPU memory allocated by game engines rather than reserving separate VRAM blocks. This optimization helps developers avoid duplicate buffers and memory fragmentation while giving them more direct control over allocation. The SDK requires replacing existing DLL files for those updating from older versions, making integration straightforward for developers already using Intel's technology.
