Intel Arc B580 Runs SteamOS Well Despite Missing XeSS Support

Intel's Arc B580 GPU now boots on Valve's SteamOS without requiring workarounds or experimental support, marking a significant step forward for non-AMD hardware compatibility. The testing, conducted by popular YouTuber ETA Prime, showed impressive gaming performance across multiple titles at 1440p resolution.

However, the Mesa driver used by SteamOS currently lacks support for Intel's Xe Matrix Extensions (XMX) engines, which significantly impacts XeSS functionality. While XeSS still operates technically, both quality and performance suffer compared to proper hardware acceleration. This limitation also completely disables XeSS Multi-Frame Generation.

Game performance results were strong, with Cyberpunk 2077 achieving 75-90 FPS at high settings with XeSS 2.0 Quality mode. Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered delivered 62-73 FPS at 1440p high settings with balanced XeSS, matching Windows performance. Older titles like Fallout 4 and Elden Ring maintained stable 60 FPS at maximum settings without upscaling.

Forza Horizon 5 showed 75-85 FPS at 1440p high settings, though ETA Prime noted this trails behind Windows performance in the mid-80s. Despite some performance gaps, this demonstrates Valve's ongoing commitment to expanding SteamOS hardware support beyond their traditional AMD partnership.
