Sony to End PlayStation Disc Production in 2028

Sony is "cautiously" proceeding with plans to cease production of PlayStation game discs by January 2028, according to CFO Lin Tao. Tao cited the overall digitalization of content as a primary driver for this decision.

This announcement has sparked backlash from gamers and industry figures concerned about a future of licensed rather than owned games and the potential disappearance of titles if digital storefronts close. Tao acknowledged the strong emotions surrounding physical media, stating Sony understands these feelings and will explore how to engage gamers in the future digital ecosystem.

The shift aligns with current sales trends, where digital downloads represented 78 percent of Sony’s full-game unit purchases in the last fiscal year. Data from Circana analyst Mat Piscatella shows a significant decline in physical game sales, with only seven PlayStation games selling over 100,000 physical units in the first half of 2026, down from 100 in 2008.
