A study led by Xin Xiong at Nanjing University suggests China could significantly rely on recycled electric vehicle components for future manufacturing. Researchers modeled material needs for batteries and motors between 2010 and 2050, considering various technological advancements and policy changes.

The study analyzed critical elements like lithium, cobalt, nickel, and copper. It factored in China's goals to boost recycling rates for battery elements from 40% to 98% and increase EV sales share to 60% by 2030.

Despite the challenges of evolving battery chemistries, the model indicates that recycled materials could meet a substantial portion of demand. The increasing number of EVs reaching their end-of-life, coupled with battery replacements and swapping, will contribute to a growing supply of recyclable materials.
