Sony is moving forward with its plan to stop producing PS5 game discs starting in 2028, despite significant backlash from its audience. During its latest earnings call, CFO Lin Tao acknowledged consumer discontent and fond memories associated with physical games but reaffirmed the company's commitment to the all-digital future. Tao cited the overall "digitalization of contents" as a key driver for the decision.

Despite receiving "various opinions" and "strong views," Sony will "cautiously move this forward." Tao hinted at potential future considerations for engaging gamers within the digital ecosystem, stating, "how do we engage the gamers is something that we would like to continue to explore." However, the company confirmed that discs for games released before the 2028 cutoff will still be produced after that date.

The decision has drawn criticism from players, with boycott suggestions emerging. Notable figures like Hideo Kojima and Yoko Taro, along with developers of "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33," have also expressed disappointment over the shift away from physical media.
