Filmmaker Simon Afram is suing Netflix after an unencrypted drive containing an unreleased Nicolas Cage movie, "Fortitude," was stolen from Netflix's offices. Afram, who invested $45 million in the film, alleges Netflix failed to implement basic security measures and waited a week to notify his production company, Op-Fortitude.

According to the lawsuit, Netflix admitted to the theft of multiple drives, including the "Fortitude" screener, which was "stolen right off a Netflix desk." Netflix allegedly offered to pay for the lost drive but downplayed the security breach. Op-Fortitude claims Netflix breached their contract by failing to delete the screener files and return the drive promptly.

Afram and Op-Fortitude are seeking at least $112.5 million in damages. Netflix disputes liability, asserting the production company failed to use industry-standard safeguards by not encrypting the drive. They claim Afram is attempting to extort money, citing a $165 million demand letter. Netflix states other stolen drives contained no content and that "Fortitude" is not the only copy, with no evidence of it being leaked so far.
