San Francisco Attorney General David Chiu has issued cease-and-desist letters to Apple and Google, demanding the removal of 13 so-called "nudification" apps from their respective app stores. These AI-powered applications can transform ordinary photos into explicit images by removing clothing, altering features, and generating non-consensual deepfake pornography, disproportionately victimizing women and children.

Chiu stated that these apps violate California laws prohibiting support for deepfake pornography and highlighted their devastating impact, including bullying, humiliation, threats, and severe mental health consequences for victims. His office estimates that Apple and Google may have profited millions from these apps through download fees.

Google spokesperson Dan Jackson confirmed that five flagged apps were suspended from the Google Play store for violating policies against harmful content. He emphasized Google's commitment to proactively detecting and removing such apps, noting that hundreds of violating applications have been suspended and related search terms restricted.
