Apple Ordered to Remove 8 Nudify AI Apps

San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu has sent a cease-and-desist letter to Apple demanding the removal of 8 "nudify" AI apps from the App Store, accusing the company of "aiding and abetting" the creation of non-consensual deepfake intimate images. A Wired report confirms both Apple and Google were ordered to prevent the sale of such apps and sever ties with their developers.

These "nudify" apps allow users to digitally undress individuals, often minors, without consent and place them into fabricated scenarios. Chiu stated that generating deepfake imagery is "illegal, harmful, and completely unacceptable" under California law, and noted both companies have likely profited from app sales and subscriptions.

Apple has not commented on the letter but previously told AppleInsider that nudification apps are prohibited with no exceptions. The company says it blocks related search terms and removes offending apps after notifying developers. Google states it investigates suspected deepfake apps and takes "swift action" when required. Chiu intends to continue pursuing both companies, demanding stronger pre-screening tools to prevent such apps from reaching users.
