Apple's App Store hosts dozens of AI nudify apps

While Elon Musk’s X faced the loudest criticism for its chatbot Grok generating non‑consensual nude images, Apple is quietly hosting a similar problem. A recent Tech Transparency Project study uncovered dozens of AI “nudify” apps still available in the App Store, offering tools that strip clothing from photos today.

The watchdog identified 47 such apps on iOS and 55 on Android, collectively downloaded over 705 million times. Analytics firm AppMagic estimates roughly $117 million in revenue, a slice of which flows to Apple and Google via their platform fees. After being alerted, Apple removed 28 listings but left the majority untouched.

Apple’s silence on the issue clashes with its public safety narrative and raises questions about profit‑driven enforcement. With lawmakers already urging the removal of X’s Grok, regulators may soon scrutinize the App Store’s review process. Observers will watch whether Apple tightens its guidelines or continues to profit from controversial AI services.
