Apple Store Shows Deepfake Porn Apps in Search Ads

Apple’s App Store is surfacing a wave of “nudify” applications that let users generate non‑consensual deepfake pornography with a single search. A recent Tech Transparency Project report, amplified by 9to5Mac, shows these tools appearing in both search suggestions and paid ads, despite the platform’s policy that bans illegal or harmful content. The ease of access raises immediate privacy concerns for everyday iPhone users.

Investigators downloaded 31 flagged apps, many rated for minors, and found they collectively amassed 483 million downloads and generated over $122 million in revenue. One example, DuoFace’s Face Swap Video, allowed a user to upload an explicit clip and replace a face with a stock photo without any warning or verification. No age‑gate or guardrails stopped the manipulation for malicious actors.

Apple removed at least 28 deepfake apps in January and threatened the removal of the Grok app, yet the marketplace still promotes similar services through advertising revenue. The findings suggest App Review’s automated filters are insufficient, forcing regulators to question whether the company can police AI‑generated abuse without external pressure. Consumers should treat App Store listings with heightened skepticism in the near term.
