Protesters demand Apple ban AI nudity apps at WWDC

Protesters from the women’s advocacy group UltraViolet marched into Apple’s WWDC opening keynote at Apple Park, brandishing signs that accuse the company of enabling child sexual abuse. They demanded that Apple purge “nudify” apps—AI tools that strip clothing from uploaded photos—from the App Store. The demonstration coincided with Heat Initiative, a coalition that pressures tech firms to stop profiting from such content.

Investigators have identified at least 47 nudify applications currently listed, including xAI’s Grok, which can generate deep‑fake nudes from a single image. Apple’s App Store guidelines ostensibly forbid non‑consensual explicit content, yet those apps remain live and some have even run ads within the store. The persistence of these services highlights a gap between policy and enforcement on Apple’s platform.

Apple’s incoming CEO John Ternus faced direct questions from the protesters, demanding a concrete response on how the company will clamp down on the offending tools. With the WWDC stage broadcasting worldwide, the demonstration forces Apple to address a mounting public‑relations crisis that could erode developer trust and invite regulatory scrutiny. Apple must now outline a clear removal plan publicly.
