Apple, Google Targeted Over AI Nudify Apps

San Francisco city attorney David Chiu has sent cease-and-desist letters to Apple and Google, demanding the removal of 13 AI-powered "nudify" apps from their respective app stores. These apps are capable of generating nonconsensual deepfake nude images.

Chiu's letters urge the tech giants to stop "aiding and abetting" the spread of such content and to cease collaborations with the developers. This action follows Chiu's previous lawsuit against websites facilitating AI-generated pornography. He suggested Apple and Google have profited significantly from in-app purchases within these offending applications and called for improved moderation on their platforms.

Despite policies banning sexual content, a report from The Tech Transparency Project indicated that many nudification apps were bypassing moderation and even being promoted on the App Store and Google Play, some rated "E" for Everyone. Google stated it has removed "hundreds" of apps with nudification features, acting swiftly on reported violations.
