ADA Ouster Controversy Deepens

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) faces ongoing controversy after blocking the publication of critical op-eds, leading authors to post them as preprints. Previously, five scientists, including Dr. Steven Kahn, were escorted out of an ADA conference in New Orleans by police for distributing an editorial that criticized the Trump administration's stance on scientific research.

The deputy editors of the ADA journal Diabetes Care have now released their editorial and seven accompanying opinion pieces on a preprint server, alleging the ADA refused to publish them. New details suggest ADA leadership may have anticipated the distribution of the editorial and arranged for security and police intervention. The deputy editors stated the ADA's refusal to publish is "unusual and unacceptable," especially given past attempts to restrict editorial freedom.

The ousted scientists, dubbed the "New Orleans Five," included Dr. Steven Kahn, Dr. Desmond Schatz, Aaron Kelly, Justin Ryder, and Irl Hirsch. Their removal from the conference, which involved police action and badge confiscation, drew widespread backlash, resignations from ADA leaders, and an apology from ADA CEO Charles Henderson. However, the scientists claim the ADA has not yet addressed the incident or implemented corrective actions, demanding a thorough investigation and greater support for their journal editors.
