Ford LMH Hypercar Targets Le Mans with 5.4L V8

Ford is developing an LMH Hypercar for Le Mans, choosing ORECA as chassis supplier rather than the LMDh route used by Alpine, BMW, Cadillac, Genesis, and Porsche. The LMH approach allows Ford to supply its own engine and bodywork while using spec hybrid components.

Ford opted for a naturally aspirated 5.4L V8 derived from the "Coyote" V8 found in Mustangs. Chief powertrain engineer Christian Hertrich explained that competition demands drove unique architecture beyond the Mustang GT3 engine. Ford hasn't released Paul Ricard test footage but posted a dyno test on YouTube.

Initial shakedown began August 5 with drivers Campbell, Mike Rockenfeller, and Tom Blomqvist. Ford reports testing proceeded smoothly, verifying control systems on the complex hybrid race car. Campbell, a multiple winner in Porsche's 963 Hypercar, leads the program alongside the ex-F1 driver Sergeant.
