Intel Arc GPU Gains Frame Buffer Compression on Linux

Intel's Arc GPU performance on Linux has improved greatly since the early days of the new architecture, but further gains are still being made through updates to the GPU drivers. The latest boost comes from the addition of frame buffer compression in the DXVK translation layer for Direct3D 8, 9, 10, and 11 games, delivered via the Mesa 26.3-devel development branch.

Frame buffer compression is a Linux kernel feature that reduces memory bandwidth and power consumption by compressing the frame buffer, thereby lowering the memory used by the display. At the time of writing, Mesa 26.3-devel can be pulled from the Mesa Git repository, but the feature—along with global frame buffer compression via DXVK—is slated for inclusion in the stable Mesa release expected in November. Reported improvements range from 0.53% to just over 5%.

Test results in the Mesa Git merge request show Battlemage GPUs gaining +5.26% in *Shadow of the Tomb Raider*, +4.62% in *Total War: Warhammer 3*, +2% in *Total War: Pharaoh*, and a slight ‑0.5% in *God of War*. On Panther Lake with an unspecified Xe3 i GPU, gains were +4.85%, +2.6%, +1.63%, +0.56%, +0.5%, and ‑0.58% across other titles.

While regressions are minimal, a 5% bump may push a game just above 60 FPS. The merge request does not provide 1% or 0.1% lows or frame times, which are important for perceived smoothness. Nonetheless, Linux gaming often advances through such incremental performance improvements.
