2027 Chevy Bolt: Faster charging, new battery, same zippy feel

After a brief cancellation, Chevrolet is bringing back the Bolt with significant upgrades for 2027. The new hatchback features a lithium iron phosphate battery that supports up to 150 kW DC fast charging via a NACS port, addressing one of the original's biggest weaknesses. The $28,995 base model now includes a more efficient powertrain, modern Android Automotive OS infotainment, and improved cabin storage.

GM originally killed the Bolt in 2022 to retool its Orion Township factory for electric trucks, but fan backlash forced a reversal. The revived model uses a 65 kWh battery pack delivering 262 miles of range and can recharge from 19-80% in just 25 minutes on a Tesla V4 Supercharger. While torque output dropped to 169 lb-ft from 266 lb-ft, clever gearing and a higher-revving motor maintain the car's characteristic zip, hitting 60 mph in 6.8 seconds.

The 2027 Bolt represents a pragmatic evolution rather than revolution. It retains the nimble handling and compact dimensions that made the original popular while adding modern features like enhanced safety systems and faster charging. Though some may miss Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, the inclusion of apps like Apple Music helps offset this loss. At under $30,000, it remains one of the most affordable EVs with practical range and charging capabilities.
