CarPlay vs GM: Sales Show Consumer Preference

GM's 2025 decision to remove Apple CarPlay and Android Auto from all vehicles in favor of an in-house Android Automotive OS system is being tested by real-world sales data. The company called the move "Jobsian" and claimed it improved privacy, but critics saw it as an attempt to control the digital relationship with customers.

Matthew Haughey, a UX/UI designer, compared sales between the Chevy Blazer EV and Honda Prologue EV, which are nearly identical vehicles built through a Honda-GM partnership. The key difference is that the Honda Prologue includes CarPlay while the Chevy Blazer does not. In 2024, the Honda Prologue EV outsold the Blazer EV by 43%. By 2025, that gap widened to 73%, and in the first half of 2026, the Prologue outsold the Blazer by more than 165%.

While the Honda Prologue EV also has a lower MSRP of $39,900 compared to the Chevy Blazer EV's $44,700, the significant sales difference suggests that CarPlay availability is a major factor. A J.D. Power study found that CarPlay users report notably higher satisfaction with their infotainment experience compared to built-in systems. This reflects broader consumer preference for familiar, simple interfaces over complex proprietary alternatives.

The data indicates that removing consumer choice in infotainment systems may harm rather than help sales, as users prefer the simplicity and familiarity of smartphone integration.
