CarPlay is a must-have for most car buyers, but three major automakers—Tesla, Rivian, and GM—still don’t support it. Tesla has never offered CarPlay, focusing on its own software. However, rumors from November 2025 suggest Tesla is working on CarPlay integration, possibly as a window within its interface. Apple shipped necessary changes in iOS 26.4, but the status remains unknown.

Rivian, inspired by Tesla, has no plans to add CarPlay. CEO RJ Scaringe argues for a seamless digital experience without jumping between systems. Software chief Wassym Bensaid recently claimed AI will make CarPlay “completely obsolete.”

GM’s resistance began in March 2023, when it announced dropping CarPlay from future EVs, later extending to gas cars. Chief Product Officer Sterling compared the move to Apple removing the disk drive, insisting it’s the future. The author believes CarPlay should remain an option, letting drivers choose their preferred platform.
