Newey Admits Late Start Will Cost Aston Martin in 2026

Adrian Newey has acknowledged that Aston Martin's delayed start on their 2026 Formula 1 challenger will inevitably impact their early-season performance. The AMR26 was officially unveiled in Saudi Arabia with its traditional racing green livery, marking the first car designed under Newey's leadership. The team's new wind tunnel wasn't operational until April 2025, putting them behind rivals who began development work in January.

Newey explained that competitors had been working on CFD and mechanical layouts for months before Aston Martin could begin their design process. The team's compressed development cycle means they're starting 'on the back foot' and will need to catch up throughout the season. Despite the challenges, the AMR26's distinctive design elements, including its nose, side pods, and engine cover, have already generated significant attention in the paddock.

Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll both emphasized the need for patience as the team integrates new partnerships with Honda and develops their first in-house gearbox. With pre-season testing beginning in Bahrain, all eyes will be on whether Aston Martin can make rapid progress despite their late start. The team's long-term vision remains focused on becoming title contenders, but both drivers acknowledge that immediate success is unlikely as they work to glue together their various new components.
