Fernando Alonso remains confident that Aston Martin will eventually field the best car in Formula 1 despite a challenging start to pre-season testing. The Spanish driver credits new team principal Adrian Newey for providing clear direction and experience needed to turn the team's fortunes around.

Aston Martin has struggled with pace during the first two 2026 tests, completing the fewest laps and setting the slowest times at Bahrain. The AMR26 faced setbacks including missing the Barcelona test and now must integrate a new Honda power unit and in-house gearbox while adapting to Newey's design philosophy. Alonso acknowledges the team is starting on the "back foot" but maintains they will improve as the season progresses.

Despite being up to four and a half seconds off the leading pace according to teammate Lance Stroll, Alonso insists the car is running smoothly. He emphasizes that aerodynamic and engine performance will be key areas for improvement. With the season-opening Australian Grand Prix approaching, Alonso expects significant upgrades for Melbourne, though he acknowledges it may take time before Aston Martin challenges at the front of the grid.
