Heading into Formula 1's major technical overhaul, expectations at Aston Martin were high with a state-of-the-art factory in Silverstone, legendary designer Adrian Newey, and a works partnership with Honda. However, the start of the new era proved far more challenging than anticipated. Mike Krack admitted the AMR26 was competitive only after the summer break, trailing Cadillac by nearly one second.

Honda faced numerous issues since returning to F1, including vibrations and performance deficits. Speaking exclusively to Autosport, trackside manager Shintaro Orihara explained that the full extent of problems became clear in January. 'Our position was not so bad at the end of last year,' he said, 'but in January, we realized performance was unstable and reliability issues emerged.' Prioritizing reliability forced Honda to slow development, delaying recovery from their performance gap. Battery-related issues further complicated progress, wasting critical winter testing time.

Orihara stressed that the complexity of new 2026 regulations—especially MGU-K power shifts from 120kW to 350kW and fuel flow changes—created compounded challenges. Removing the MGU-H also impacted drivability, a recurring theme. Honda aims to address power deficits with a Zandvoort upgrade focused on the internal combustion engine, tested during Hungaroring filming days.

Despite knowing competitiveness requires time, Honda hopes this marks a turning point.
