Liverpool have signed Barcelona captain Ronald Araújo on a season-long loan with an option to buy for €55 million. The 27-year-old Uruguay international arrives as a plug-and-play defensive option after Liverpool's preseason losses exposed a lack of depth at the back. Araújo can also play right back, a key asset given Conor Bradley's injury.\n\nAraújo began his career as a forward before converting to center back.

He made over 200 appearances for Barcelona, winning three La Liga titles. However, he has struggled with form and fitness, suffering 17 injuries since 2018 and missing an average of 103 days per season over the last five years. He also requested a mental health break in late 2025 after a red card against Chelsea.\n\nBarcelona boss Hansi Flick said Araújo's style did not fit his system and that the player wanted a fresh start.

Araújo is expected to partner Virgil van Dijk in central defense when Liverpool face Newcastle United. The move is shrewd but carries risk given his recent struggles.
